I’m wrapping up my coverage of my recent trip to San Francisco with quite possibly one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. As I was planning my trip to San Francisco I stumbled upon One Market listed on multiple ‘best of’ lists and upon one glance of the menu was sold! The restaurant had great reviews and featured an open-exhibition kitchen with a chef’s table overlooking all of the production.
We took our seat at the chef’s table, located right next to chef Mark Dommen. It was interesting to watch him call out the orders to the kitchen staff and see him put the finishing touches on each plate before it went out the door. It was interesting to chat with him throughout the meal about each course and his inspiration for the meal. But I’m getting ahead of myself here! Our waitress stopped by to say hello as did the restaurant’s knoweldgable sommelier, Tonya. Next to chef Dommen, she was my favorite.
We opted for the 6-course tasting menu as a way to explore the menu and enjoy an array of tasting to compliment each course. Tonya started us out with a glass of champagne to celebrate our visit to San Francisco as we awaited our first course. I will note that my husband and I had slightly different tastings because I’m such a horribly picky eater. I will also note that prior to this meal I wrinkled my nose at the ver thought of duck and now it’s probably one of my favorite things to eat.
My first course was a Beet Carpaccio which featured a thinly sliced beet served with 3 different flavors of goat cheese. Shawn started with the Grilled Rhode Island Squid salad which he said was delicious and I thought it was beautifully plated. And of course, the wine pairing: Lieu Dit Chemin Blanc, a light wine and a perfect compliment to our meal.
Next up on my tasting menu was Porchetta di Testa served with a glass of Via Giusti Pinot Noir. Shawn was served a tasting of the foie gras and the Grilled Octopus salad served with quinoa and mint. I’m thankful that each of these servings were small because I’m not sure how I would have made it through the entire 6 courses with everything tasting so delicious!
Third on my tasting was the Mushroom Stroganoff with homemade gemelli and a porcini cream sauce. Now I’m usually not a fan of mushrooms but this dish was really delightful and packed with a creamy flavor. This dish was served with a glass of Deux Punx Cabernet Franch, which is one of my favorite varieties of wine. Shawn’s dish was a Lightly Smoked Tasmanian Ocean Trout served over a potato cake and topped with an egg. This was one of his favorite dishes of the meal. I’m pretty sure he would have licked the plate it nobody was around to see him!
My next dish was their signature Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin. I saw quite a few of these coming out of the kitchen and I was eager to get to that course on the tasting. The pork was cooked perfectly medium and served with a delicious aus jus. Shawn’s dish featured Pancetta Wrapped Day Boat Scallops with a side of potato celery ‘risotto. The wine pairing was Sans Liege Syrah with the scallops and my pairing was Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was a 2007 and you could absolutely tell the age of the pour.
Are you feeling full yet? I was too at this point in the meal but kept moving forward in my journey of food at One Market! The next dish was my favorite: Black Pepper Crusted Liberty Farms Duck Breast served with duck leg confit. I was afraid to take the first bite but could not believe how flavorful the duck breast and confit could be. The duck leg confit was compressed into a small cube and seared on all sides for a crispy finish. I wanted second! Shawn’s dish was their Red-Wine Braised Venison Osso Buco served with a side of spaetzle. The wine pairing was Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon, a perfect compliment to the flavors featured.
With multiple wine glasses in front of us and full bellies, we ordered dessert. Who could resist?! And not just one, but THREE desserts arrived on our plate for a nice little tasting. Chocolate Toffee Almond Crunch Cake, Chocolate Caramel Pecan Tart and Butterscotch Pudding. Just typing this makes me want to go back for that crunch cake!
We had an amazing experience at One Market. I don’t have enough good things to say about the service and environment and how pleasant Cheff Dommen and Tonya the sommelier were during our meal. If you’re in the San Francisco area and are looking for a classy and sophisticated dining experience, head to One Market and try the tasting menu. You won’t be disappointed by the flavor journey that you will embark upon and you’ll want to rant and rave just like I am doing right now.
