I wanted to start out this week by wrapping up our travels to Kansas City. If you remember from the Kansas City BBQ Tour Preview, Hint #4 mentioned that we would share a little secret about Kansas City which has nothing to do with BBQ. Today we’re detouring from BBQ and talking about Lidia’s Kansas City, quite possibly one of the most delicious Italian restaurants that I have stepped foot inside. Lidia’s is located inside of the Freight House, the same beautiful location as Jack Stack.
Let’s talk a little bit about some background on Lidia’s before we chat about the food. Lidia’s is owned by none other than the very talented Italian chef Lidia Bastianich. I was familiar with her restaurant because several times I have visited her New York restaurant called Becco, which is of a similar concept. Much like Becco, Lidia’s Kansas City offers the rich flavors of Italy in a welcoming setting, with daily pasta selections.
Once seated, we were presented with a plate of 2 flavors of hummus: kalamata olive, and basil. And of course, a bread basket. It was really hard to not overindulge in this little appetizer as the hummus was so perfectly flavored and creamy in texture.
While there is a menu filled with options, the daily pasta trio is what really keeps me coming back to her restaurants. Each day the chef prepares 3 different pasta selections that you can order on an all-you-can-eat basis. Waiters bring around fresh pans of pastas for you to fill your stomach at your own leisure. The night that we visited, the features included a rotini with red sauce, shrimp fettuccine with an olive oil and garlic sauce, and ravioli stuffed with spinach and cheese. I think my favorite was the fresh ravioli!
Shawn opted for the gnocchi with braised duck ragu. While I wouldn’t normally go with something like duck, the waitress spoke very highly of this dish. I’m pretty sure that Shawn agreed with her recommendation because his plate was cleaned in no time!
To top off a delicious meal we ordered a plate of tiramisu to share. I have to say that this was quite possibly the creamiest tiramisu that I have ever tasted. The coffee to cream to lady finger ratio was just perfect, and the tiny little chocolate covered espresso bean on top was a delicious garnish. If I could get my hands on that recipe I would probably be making batches of it non-stop!
Following our delicious meal we were offered the chance to have a sneak peak of where the magic happens: the kitchen! The kitchen of an Italian restaurant is every food-lover’s dream (or at least mine). Walking through the kitchen we caught glimpses of the pasta machines where everything is made fresh daily, vats of fresh osso bucco ready to be served, and cooks preparing some of the best Italian food that you will ever have. Most tempting to my eyes were the sheet pans of tiramisu just waiting to be ordered. It took everything in me not to dip my fingers into the pans!
Overall we had such a great dining experience at Lidia’s Kansas City. The staff was wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious! Thank you to Lidia’s for offering up such great hospitality and inviting us in to dine with you!
